WATER LEAK DETECTION AND PRESSURE MANAGEMENT

Water Network Optimization Through Pressure Management and Advanced Leak Detection

ETS carried out an integrated programme of analysis, monitoring, and leak detection within the Mareno Ovest water distribution district, which was experiencing excessive pressure levels, hydraulic instability, and abnormal minimum night flows.

The activities primarily focused on the Borgo Fior and Ramera areas, combining pressure management, step testing, instrumental inspections, and leak detection using geophones and hydrophones.

The comprehensive analysis of the water distribution network enabled the identification of several hidden leaks and significantly improved the operating conditions of the districts, reducing both pressure levels and minimum night flows.

Activities Performed

- Analysis of the network's hydraulic behaviour and remote monitoring data. - Installation of monitoring equipment to measure pressure levels and detect water hammer events. - Pressure regulation and stabilization within the water distribution districts. - Night-time step testing and targeted valve operations. - Leak detection using geophones and acoustic correlation with hydrophones. - Identification of critical pipeline sections and hidden leaks. - Functional checks of flow meters. - Analysis of results and assessment of network performance following the interventions.

Results Achieved

The interventions led to a significant reduction and stabilization of network pressures, resulting in substantial improvements in water distribution efficiency:

- Borgo Fior: Minimum night flow reduced from approximately 20 to 12 L/s. - Ramera: Minimum night flow reduced from approximately 5 to 1 L/s. - Pressure optimization: Night-time pressure levels reduced to approximately 3.2 bar in Borgo Fior and 3.0 bar in Ramera. - Leak identification: Additional hidden leaks detected through acoustic correlation using hydrophones.

These activities contributed to improving the network's hydraulic balance, reducing water losses, and identifying remaining critical issues requiring further targeted interventions.
